About the Author
Cheryl Boucher, MS, OTR, has worked for the last 18 years as a school-based occupational therapist in a large Indianapolis school district. In her role as an OTR, she has had extensive experience working with students with autism and many other special needs. She consults with both teaching staff and parents to support students with autism and other special needs and has worked at a pediatric outpatient clinic servicing children with autism and sensory processing disorder. Cheryl also has experience with assistive technology evaluation and services. Cheryl has spoken nationally on writing strategies to support academic achievement and sensory processing for students with autism and related disorders. Finally, Cheryl has an awesome 14-year-old nephew with autism. Kathy Oehler, MS, CCC-SLP, has worked with individuals with ASD for more than 30 years. In her role as autism consultant for a large urban school district, she has helped teachers, parents, and administrators understand and meet the needs of students with ASD and a variety of related disorders. As a member of her district behavior support team, Kathy has worked with educational teams to help them recognize the impact writing challenges can have on behavior and academic performance. Kathy is a national speaker, helping teachers and parents meet the educational needs of students with ASD and related disorders. She recently presented workshops to help school personnel implement writing strategies to increase academic achievement.

“I Hate to Write” is a fantastic must-have resource which includes some of the best tools for teachers, parents and individuals with autism for countless writing situations. I am in awe of this book and what it can offer to so many individuals who have trouble with many writing exercises. Working with individuals on the autism spectrum, I can tell you that many of the meltdowns that occur with these individuals can be directly related to being given writing tasks. By having hands-on and easy-to-follow tools, I can see the writing process becoming so much easier for these individuals. After practicing many of these strategies/techniques, I can easily see many students start to enjoy the writing process. HONESTLY!
This book is intended for K through 12th grade, but could also be used by an adult to help organize thoughts, try basic strategies and more regarding any writing process.
Each section follows this format which is symbolized by an icon making it easy to identify:

In my opinion, the printable “Take It and Use It” pages, alone, make this an excellent resource. As a bonus, all of the worksheets can be downloaded online! Teachers, tutors, therapists and parents will be amazed by the printable worksheets. The book begins with an awesome user-friendly “At-A-Glance Cross-Referencing Take It and Use It” worksheets to tell you which worksheet can easily be used with various topics or challenges.
Here are the topics or “Teacher Concerns” covered:
• Why students “freeze” when assignments are given.
• When it’s time to write, he can’t think of what to say.
• When it’s writing time, he can’t come up with a topic.
• He gets “stuck” when he is writing.
• He gets frustrated when writing (meltdown).
• When it’s time to write, he won’t even try.
• He can verbalize his answers and thoughts, but can’t get them on paper.
• His writing is so small and floats above the lines.
• Even when paying attention, he doesn’t seem to ‘hear’ my directions.
• He seems to be listening, but sometimes he completely misunderstands the assignment.
• He has difficulty with spelling.
• He can’t organize his words into a logical sentence.
• He writes in sentence fragments.
• He can’t organize his thoughts into an organized paragraph.
• There is not flow to his paragraphs.
• His sentences are so brief!
• He writes the bare minimum.
• When I ask him to edit and revise, he just stares at the paper.
• Printed words don’t seem to mean anything to him. He only wants to read non-fiction books.
Fiction seems to make him lost.
• He likes science projects, but he hates the lab reports.
• Big Projects. Problems that go with writing a research paper
• He doesn’t understand the purpose of writing a letter.
The book ends with more useful resources in addition to the references and suggested additional reading.
• Appendix A contains a very informative “Overview of Research on the Brain, ASD and the Writing Process” which is very interesting, but I found it helpful that it was in the back and not woven into the meat of the chapters. To me, this would have confused the easy-to-follow information, but having it in the appendix makes it accessible for further explanations.
• Appendix B is a glossary which more thoroughly explains some of the terminology and specific techniques.
• Appendix C is “Tips for the Left-Handed Writer.”
• Appendix D contains “Letter Formation Strategies” which I found VERY USEFUL!
• Appendix E contains “Letter Writing Tips.”
• Appendix F offers “Spacing Between Words” tools.
• Appendix G is “Keyboarding Strategies.”
• Appendix H provides websites for Assistive Technology Writing Support.
• Appendix I highlights “Sensory Supports for Positioning and Regulation” with photos.
• Appendix J covers “Treats are More than Rewards.” How snacks can support a student.
I wish there was an option for a 10 star rating, because this book IS a fantastic resource!

An EXTREMELY comprehensive resource!!!!

My first impression of this book---incredible! I HATE TO WRITE gives the reader a very comprehensive view of writing difficulties often experienced by individuals with ASD. There can be so many underlying factors impacting writing success; it can often be overwhelming to figure out how to help students with ASD reach their full writing potential. This book has a nice way of dissecting the underlying skills needed to be a successful writer---emphasizing the sensory, motor, language and organization demands of writing. I HATE TO WRITE provides many typical Teacher Concern areas such as "He can verbalize his answers and thoughts, but can't get them on paper" or "His writing is so small and floats above the lines" or "He seems to be listening, but sometimes he completely misunderstands the assignment". Following each Teacher Concern, there is an explanation of `why' that writing difficulty may occur and evidence-based teaching strategies to support that particular skill area. Finally there are `Take it and Use It' forms following every Teacher Concern. They can be copied and used right away in the classroom!! That is really convenient. This resource is a must-have for anyone wishing to make the writing process easier and more successful for individuals with ASD!!

As I was reading “I Hate to Write”, I immediately thought of numerous teachers who would be thrilled to get their hands on such a practical resource! My favorite component of the book is the Take It and Use It worksheets that help facilitate writing in a variety of ways. An added bonus is the continual references to current evidence based practices and what strategies fall in line with them. This is a resource that will get plenty of use with a wide range of student learners!
