Good Do It Yourself Guide

This book is a good guide to counter some of the others out there that are entirely too oriented toward those with access to professional facilities. Few of the shade tree restorers among us have ready access to the full gamut of spray booths, high end abrasive blasting, two-stage compressors, etc.--you get the idea. This book is more focused on doing things economically. Following the guidelines in this book, you might not get the results that you would in a pro shop, but you will also avoid the easily recommended 'get all the best toys' mentality. One item of note: because this book is out of Great Britain, the product recommendations are not directly relatable to U.S. products / product lines, but comparable products are recognizable.

As with all books by Martin Thaddeus, this one just starts on the subject without a whole lot of filler. I wish this guy wrote more books covering other automotive topics. A great buy for the true diy who doesn't have all the money in the world.

A very informative book.

This book has good information to learn. I shows you how to do all the painting. I was not able to try anything, because I am unemployed, and do not have any cash to do anything with.

This book goes right with Martin Thaddeus other book on body repair.

His body repair book is very very good. It will teach you to take a really really rusted out car, and make it new again. He teaches you how to repair parts of the car, without buying the part. Which is a much cheaper way of repairing it.

Concrete Fever

The title, the cover, the illustrations, the story, and Nathaniel Kressen's staggering prose: It all comes together in Concrete Fever, a novel which perfectly captures the desperate exhilaration of love, a feeling we all experience differently yet still manage to find some truth in wherever we find it. It might be cliche to draw comparisons to Catcher in the Rye or certain corners of Last Exit to Brooklyn, but those aren't bad places to begin. Jumper and Gypsy are the main characters, but so too is New York City, a pulsating, living playground of grit and gristle. The romance of derelict rooftops and the curious feeling that a total stranger can suddenly become the most important person in your life are rendered vividly, emotionally and unflinchingly. Concrete Fever is a confident, assured and breathtaking novel.

A brilliant, bold, and emotional kick in the teeth

I'll preface by saying that Concrete Fever is not an easy book to read, and I mean that in the best possible way. This is a multi-generational tale of disillusionment and broken dreams, a crushing exploration of one young man's journey from cradle to, perhaps (but perhaps not), an early grave. Be prepared for a novel that may make you feel grief and sorrow, for the characters within these pages are so very real that you will rage and cry for them, feel their indignation, their fury, their despair.

Again, this is not an easy book to read. But if you are brave enough to press through these pages rife with turmoil, with Jumper's mourning, his bitterness, punctuated by his radiant glimmers of hope, you will be rewarded. This is a book that will make you feel, and that is a testament to the skill and raw talent of Nathaniel Kressen. That this is his first novel is simply incredible. I was utterly impressed with how often he took events in wholly unexpected directions, defying cliche, embodying the twists and turns of life in a heightened literary narrative style.

Concrete Fever is beautiful, stirring, sad, inspiring, and yet, at its core, full of hope that is of an intensity so great that most of us have never dared let it into our hearts. This is an author worth discovering now, worth watching blossom into an incredible literary voice of our generation. Get in on the ground floor. Read Concrete Fever.

A Salinger Ride Through a Lethem City

A very rewarding read, filled with strong characters, compelling writing and a unique storytelling style.

It took me a second to get into this book, as I didn't find the main character, Jumper, all that appetizing right off the bat - he's sarcastic, dark, brooding, and seems to want to tell you how life is rather than show you through his actions. But the more I read, the more those facts shone as a sign of the trueness written into the character - he's not some cool cynic or a cliched bad boy that a lot of young authors, I think, use to write their preferred version of themselves into their books. Jumper's a deeply flawed, but believable, protagonist who's story runs deep, and the more I accepted his faults and his fractured view as an entry into a skewed POV, the more I felt that I was getting to know a realistic, challenging and deep character - a very rewarding experience.

The ride the book takes you on has some elements that I've heard compared to Catcher in the Rye, and while that feeling is there for me, the adventure that spines the story reminds me a lot of Jonathan Lethem's city-based novels. The city itself is a hugely important character here - especially as we are still uncovering the "truth" behind the two protagonists, who talk spirals around their pasts rather than spell it out. I love the city represented here - with all of it's hints at actual NYC haunts and hoods, it exists as a playground for the secret stories and journeys the city night harbors. The characters' odyssey ranges from the gritty to the fantastic, and tethers itself to the lore and mythical aura of the city.

The flashes of background to Jumper's story are well executed - at first abrupt, but deeply engrossing. There are no easy answers in the story - if there are answers at all - but the way the story is told is just as important as the words displayed themselves. We learn a lot about Jumper and his mother in the way he explains things, even if he dances around his true feelings and certain events - explaining things that plainly would beat it over the head, I think, and make the story less appealing. It's the way it all slowly exposes itself, raw and nervy, that makes this book so compelling and deeply felt for me.

4 stars because the book is very easy to read and gives the basics. I would have liked more technical detail but this is a great starting point.
Something that is not really covered in the book but is something that all purchasers should be aware of when comparing term vs. LIRP. When your term expires and you are sick - good luck finding another cheap term life insurance. Some terms have guaranteed renewable clauses but at a new outrageous price if you are sick. This happened to my family when one of the members became sick. Thankfully we had the Universal policy and were able to keep the insurance coverage. The term life insurance that we had would not renew on our sick family member. So when crunching the numbers also think about heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke and other health issues as you get older.

Simple guide to an important topic

This second book by David McKnight, "Look Before You LIRP," helps to demystify what to me is at once the best, and the most under-utilized tool available in retirement planning.

I am like most financial advisors in that my introduction to retirement planning focused almost exclusively on stock market-based strategies. We were not taught to plan for the increasing risk that today’s retirees face of higher tax rates (in fact, potentially dramatic tax increases). The LIRP strategy was never on my radar … not in the finance classes, the licensing exams, and definitely not in the brokerage training. Based on solid, dependable insurance concepts, the LIRP is simply not widely understood in the securities industry.

In his first book, "The Power of Zero," McKnight compellingly presented the case for addressing three risk areas that could upend a traditional retirement plan: market risk, higher taxation (what McKnight terms “legislative risk”), and higher healthcare costs, particularly for long term care. And now, in "Look Before You LIRP," McKnight takes us under the hood of the LIRP, describing in detail how to find the most suitable combination of features for an effective LIRP strategy.

Written in an accessible, conversational style, this book can be easily understood by the client, and even the most seasoned professional will learn new things. I know I did.

Every year the company I'm affiliated with host a convention in Las Vegas, because of David McKnight's Look Before You LIRP, I had the best convention ever. For the first time ever my team and myself where not just getting IUL information from the different vendors - who just tell you the highlights of their IUL plan - we were able to engage with real questions about those carriers products. One product provider was so thrown off by our question that he had to pull out his laptop to ensure that he gave us the correct answer. I totally respected that provider for that! My team and myself felt so EMPOWERED! Thank you so much for writing such a great book. The illustrations helped my team and I grasp the concepts you shared in the book. I have a ton of essential oils books and what a great essential oils book this is. Most books are just repeats of what we already know. this book is full of useful information about oils and information on how to make our lives better without the use of toxins. There is a wonderful section on the history and usage of essential oils, individual oil information, health and healing, foods, great DIY information. This is exactly what I thought it would be. This is my main go-to book for essential oil information.

Short, sharp, and sure to enlighten, this book takes a no-non-sense approach to explaining why we should be positive about the reality we exist in. This was the first I've about Positive Realism, and I feel thoroughly introduced to a logical philosophy. As a solipsist existentialist, this provided me with ample food for thought.

From one of the thinkers prominent in hermeneutics, I think that to make this turn to a new realism requires a reflection on what happen with hermeneutics after this and how it relates with social neuroscience in a non reductionist way, for example in relation to topics such as perception and intentionality a la Searle, a more profound analysis of the differences with the views of radical realist and the approach of Marcus Gabriel 'No World', and everything else exist, philosophy.

Is it possible to experience joy if you don’t experience pain? Is absorbing someone’s pain a gift or a curse? Shusterman explores these central questions in this thought-provoking new book. Sixteen-year-old Tennyson fumes when he learns his twin sister, Bronte, is dating Bruiser, the guy voted Most Likely to Go to Jail, but Bronte insists Bruiser is misunderstood. Tennyson is eventually won over and befriends Bruiser, and that’s when the twins notice something odd. Their cuts and bruises disappear overnight while Bruiser is a mass of new hurts; somehow he takes on the pain, both physical and emotional, of the people he cares for. The story is narrated by Tennyson, Bronte, and Cody, Bruiser’s brother, in prose and by Bruiser in free verse, and the individual voices are nicely distinct. It is Tennyson, though, who stands out as he evolves from self-centered bully to caring young man and ponders big questions about friendship and sacrifice. Bruised, broken, down but not out

Neal Shusterman really has a knack for writing Young Adult books that resonate with a much wider audience. I started reading "Bruiser" thinking I knew what the plot was going to be - I was WRONG. I hadn't read any of the promo materials and so had no idea and am glad that it happened that way. I was able to enjoy the twists and turns of the story because of that.

I really enjoyed that the book was written in four voices and that one of the voices was done totally in poetry. Shusterman just keeps surprising me with the high calibre of his writing. Unwind was one of my favorite all-time books. But guess what? This one is right up there, too.

Shusterman's books make you think. They make you question the world and how it operates. But they do it in an exceptionally readable manner.

CAUTION:
I would recommend this for older teens or adults. Some language, sexual situations, violence.

A wonderful, compelling read

Much like Shusterman's Unwind, Bruiser is a well written story peopled with engagaging characters that will make you think, and will stay with you long after you finish the last page. The author's incredible gift with dialogue, his expert pacing and his ability to blend in totally impossible concepts and make them believable is truly extraordinary. I admire people who exude an air of being comfortable in their own skin, and it's this that I think of when I read this book. The author is just so comfortable in his own storytelling, that there are no dialogue blips, no blatantly obvious plot devices, and no clunky transitions. This tale moves along seamlessly and the reader is left with a story that is stunningly authentic.

The narrative is presented from the differing points of view of brother and sister Tennyson and Bronte, Brew, and his younger brother Cody. If I have one issue with the book, it's that these characters come across as older than their years. They are not even 16, but come across as much older teens. The prose is very well written, and the transitions between points of view are done expertly. It's Brew's point of view, written in free verse, that truly contains the power of this story. I am not a fan of free verse. I steer clear of it whenever possible, but here it so effectively gives Brew his own unique voice that I was riveted. His verse is full of pain, anger and joy. His ruminations on the nature of pain and his abilities to absorb the pain (both emotional and physical) of others are very poignant.

Each character goes through his own journey in this novel, and you don't always like them. They do make you feel, and that seems to be the whole point of this story. What good are the ups if you can't feel the downs? This is a very good book that could very well be the author's best yet. There are no language issues, no sexual situations, but some violence and lots of intense emotion. This is a book to savor for both teens and adults.

Sickening.

Definitely not for sensitive teens. The poor main character, Brewster, had the life from hell. I don't even want to talk about the sad plot. I may be addicted to happy endings, but this story made me more angry than sad. What was the author thinking? That this would be enjoyable reading? When I got to the end, I would have thrown it in the trash--something I never never do to a book--but it was on my Kindle, so I just deleted it. It's not that the writing was bad, it wasn't. The story was just sick.

Sorry, Neal Shusterman, I don't think I'll want to read any more of your books.
