Important Note about Edition

As is quite apparent from the one review of the hardcover edition (and from my machine design professor repeatedly referring to this as a reference book), this isn't the best textbook from which to learn the material in the first place, but it has every formula you'll ever need (well, maybe not...). However, there is one very important fact to note if you are considering buying this book for a class. It is NOT identical to the hardcover 8th edition; all problems and examples are in SI units (often with significantly different numbers), and the problem numbers are not necessarily the same (one cannot help but suspect that this is intentional on the part of the publisher, since it means that the cheaper paperback edition cannot be easily substituted for the hardcover edition). If you will need this book for homework, be aware of this.

Machine Design review

This book has many typos and confusing information contained in it. This book didn't really help me learn anything about machine design. The examples are way too confusing and they pull formulas from multiple chapters to solve an example problem.

Very Good but also Very Difficult!

I've used both the Princeton Review and the Barron's Math II book. This book is really advance so only get it if you plan to score above the 750s. What's great about this book is that it is much more detailed than the Princeton one so you definitely learn a lot of and like others have this, it is very very challenging. I bought this book mainly to practice and also to learn many of the concepts. There are questions after each section and the concepts are taught in a more example based fashion. What I like about this book is its details and how its very focused on Math level 2. The tests are also very good because they really get you to think and it prepares you really well.

The problem I found with this book is that there are certain questions that they test after each section where there are no examples for. This normally happens for 1-2 questions every section, so it isn't major. This is like a teacher who tries to challenge students by putting a question on the test that the students were never even taught. Some of the sections are also taught in a really difficult to understand way. The explanations for certain questions can also be very vague at times and often it is explained as if you had a LOT of background knowledge.

Overall, I found this book a good way to learn stuff, but like others have said, note that not only are the questions difficult, but the way many concepts are taught are also hard. If you don't have much time to prepare, I recommend the Princeton Math II book, as it is much more simplified, but if you have a good amount of time to spend for this I highly recommend this Barron's Math II book. If your planning to achieve a really high score, this book will prepare you very well for the real test.

Not representative of the real test.

The practice questions and practice tests in this book are MUCH harder than what actually shows up on the Math II Subject Test. Ku and Dodge also review many topics in detail that will not be tested on the Subject Test either. Working through this book and slogging through its tedious, difficult problems is great practice and will make the real Subject Test feel like a breeze.

Don't be discouraged if your practice test scores aren't as high as you'd expect. I scored in the low-to-mid-700's on all my Barron's practice tests but comfortably and easily (read: finished the test 20 minutes early) scored an 800 on the real thing as a sophomore.

Great Practice Guide

As has been previously stated, this book is relatively difficult. Had to get that out of the way first. However, that is not (to my mind) a bad thing at all.

As a student two years removed from precalculus (finished the class June 2011, took Math II Subject Test June 2013), I needed mainly a review of topics (not self-studying, etc). The difficulty of the math wasn't so much my concern as just reviewing some of the more remote subjects (hyperbolas, for example) that would be presented on the test. The beauty of this book is that they are all there - occasionally in more detail than one would like!

However, as someone who was aiming for an 800 (and this book helped me succeed in getting that score), I would rather take the Type II error (learn too much) than the Type I error (learn too little) [I'm sorry, AP Stat reference :]. This book will prepare you for any and everything on the test.

A quick note: I have always been a student who does better in math/science as opposed to reading/writing, so again, the math part itself came relatively easily to me, both when I first learned it in class and then in the refresher [this book]. If you are a student who struggles at math (or simply wants to do well, but not necessarily in the 750+ range), it might be a better use of your time to find a less advanced book (and remember, you can always come back to this one if the Math II doesn't go your way the first time).

However, doing these problems is like a professional baseball player in the on-deck circle swinging a weighted bat - it is harder than normal, but once the weights come off, the bat (the actual test questions) feel like swinging a toothpick.

If you go through this book, even just doing the parts you don't remember and then doing the practice tests, there is almost no way your score will be less than 700. If you truly want to do well, this book is definitely recommended. If you don't care, but want to be pleasantly surprised, this book is for you too :)

Also, look at every review of 2-4 stars - most of the people there got 800's using this book, and simply mentioned that the stuff was harder than the test - so it's not that the quality of the instruction in this book is bad, it's just that in retrospect people wish they hadn't done as much of the work! The beauty of course is that YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THE ENTIRE THING! Just choose the spots where you are unsure and work those aspects of your knowledge. I was simultaneously studying for Physics SAT II, and I needed to study that topic far more. Just be efficient, and this book will do the rest if you study it well.

One last thing (this is just personal advice) - If you are a junior planning on taking this subject test, and you are in AP classes, I would strongly recommend taking the subject test in June. AP exams are over, giving you at least 1-2 weeks of study time (where HW levels are low) for those so inclined, and you will know in advance if you have to review for the fall of senior year.

Good for natural explorers, young and old, or family

The book is interesting. My kids, 4 and 7, and I like to explore the outdoors. The book includes the 5 major classes of vertebrates and most types of invertebrates, and plants. In addition to a lot of information for adult professional naturalists, it also tells you what you can do for fun as an amateur naturalist right in your yard or at home, e.g., put a beautiful spider web on a cardboard, make an ant town, make your own snake stick, make a pitfall trap, etc. Good for homechoolers or any family who like to explore with their kids. That's why the title is "The Amateur Naturalist."

Purchased this book for our grandson who lives in Honduras with his missionary parents. We were delighted and so was he! The book was wonderfully illustrated; and had many projects that he can do. It was great to see him pouring over the book; gleefully pointing out the many interesting things he could do. His main interest has been in bugs/insects....but this book will broaden his horizons as he explores nature with the suggestions and information in this book.

Missed the mark a bit, although still worth reading after "Dementia for Dummies."

So wanted to give this new book a 5-star rating, but it was clear after a cover-to-cover reading that they rushed this to market, jamming their old U.S. version (plain "Alzheimer's for Dummies") together with their U.K. version ("Dementia for Dummies"). This new one has multiple typo's, missing sidebar text, and more. But, the main reason for not fully loving this newest release are the constant (and mainly confusing) interchangeable references they use between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Dementia. A point for them to maintain in their next edition with greater clarity throughout the book is that, AD is a type of Dementia, not the other way around.

The bottom-line... even though a few years old, the aforementioned "Dementia for Dummies," Dementia For Dummies - UK is much better at giving you a firm foundation, it's their bigger worldview edition. You can still find it online and we'd suggest you start with it (even if you buy both at the same time). Then, once you are grounded, you can pick up this latest release and ignore the AD confusion, and instead focus on the good stuff: great insight on legal and finance, making medical decisions, care planning, in-home services, and considerations for long-term care, etc.

An Essential Book

I've been a big fan of Glenn O'Brien's tone and perspective for a long time. As GQ's style guy and a further contributor to the magazine and its now-defunct podcast, it would be easy and perhaps predictable for him to take a dismissive or snobby stance while dealing out the dos and don'ts of taste, the way that other style and advice tsars seem to traffic in snarkiness while resenting their readers (thinking of Esquire's sex columnist here). But O'Brien the writer is always unfailingly polite, empathetic and seems generally concerned with being of service in his column, in an almost Buddhist sense.

I was a little bit worried about the book after GQ published a teaser for it which distilled some of O'Brien's tips on social politics into a single, awkward article that, stripped of the context of the book, came across as a bit bitchy and shallow. I bought the book anyway and my worries were unfounded. Most of this book should be canonized. As someone discovering for the first time O'Brien's writing beyond the pages of GQ, I was surprised at what a powerful prose stylist he is. Some of the passages are more effusive than others and when he really gets going there's a huge, poetic lift. This is not a superficial book. He really lays out a clear philosophy of living that, at the risk of oversimplifying it, treats manners as a form of deference to the beauty of life - by paying attention to details and expressing ourselves in a thoughtful manner, we are telling the world and its people that we love it enough to take it seriously.

If I had a gripe it would be the numerous redundancies - for instance the fifth time O'Brien tells us who Beau Brummell is, or the seventh time he makes the point that casual dress codes in the workplace have served to blur social status. I couldn't tell if these were editing errors or just O'Brien having a senior moment but as an attentive reader it did feel a bit like having my intelligence insulted to be re-told the same things so many times, sometimes even on the same page. [Edit: Some have said this book is a compilation of previously existing articles. I'm not sure if that's the case but it still seems like those redundancies should be addressed in this compilation for readability.]

Some of the chapters, such as the ones on dealing with air travel and doctors, are marred by a grouchiness that, as a man in my early 30s, I just couldn't relate to. But then again, this is O'Brien at his most explicit and not his most polite. And the candor is exhilarating elsewhere, like in the rants on drug use, taste as a matter of survival and a particularly inspired chapter on the vital powers of old age vs. the emptiness of youth worship.

I could have used a chapter on fatherhood and it seems that a section called How to Compete would have been a no-brainer for a book on manhood. But maybe they'll tack that on to future editions - I definitely had the sense when reading this that I was encountering the first edition of something that would last (and regretted spilling so much food on its pages).

Buy this book. For my sake. I need compatriots.

How to Be a Man - Glenn O'Brien (Rizzoli)

You remember Glenn O'Brien. As music columnist for Andy Warhol's Interview magazine, G.O'B. was the periscope on the submarine that was underground, punk rock during its landmark decade in the 80's. He later expanded his sphere of influence into fashion and art through his "Style Guy" column at GQ magazine and a stint with the publisher of magazines like "Antiques" and "Art in America.". In fact, when it comes to fashion, style and the arts, the O'Brien arsenal is tough to beat.

It is then with both great anticipation and curiosity that we watch as he turns his gaze to the subject of manhood in the newly released volume "How to Be a Man: A Guide to Style and Behavior for the Modern Gentleman." (Rizzoli)

So what is a man in the modern day sense and what does it take to become one?

In O'Brien's view, a man is a person who employs the utmost of style and care when it comes to everything from wardrobe to behavior to the way he exudes his sexuality. O'Brien is a taskmaster when it comes to natty dress, manners and even where a man fits along the hetero, homo and metro-sexual continuum. In fashion, O'Brien's purview runs head-to-toe covering every detail from haircuts to underwear, collar-stays to ascots. There is even an ample discussion of the so-called `dandies.' (He likes hetros and dandies, though he chastises some gays for not being "gay enough.")

No one can fault O'Brien for his erudite musings. His range of knowledge is exemplary - covering cultures from the ancient Greeks to the Taliban, philosophers from Socrates to Chuck D. (Only O'Brien would cover the range of beards from ZZ Top to Rutherford B. Hayes.) His writing style is about as punchy as it gets, with each sentence delivering like the cutting remarks of a professorial stand-up comic. One must only question his target.
Has he written the book for people like himself? Is O'Brien merely trying to show off his erudite plumage? (probably) Is he so imbued with the Manhattan lifestyle that he can no longer relate to readers in the flyover states - or they to him? (He basically writes them off towards the end in his chapter on patriotism when he proclaims of the great middle ground, "Wouldn't they be happier without our smug East Coast attitudes?")

In all, O'Brien's book is not a guide for the everyman but rather a dissertation of a certain style designed for the (increasingly) select few for whom such rules still seems to matter. But as a throughly entertaining read on the art, fashion, behaviors and history of the modern gent (dandy or not) it succeeds no matter what code you ascribe to - dress or zip.

How To Be A Man is smart and funny, and sure: some of his proclamations are ludicrous; saying someone like Armani looks good with his deep-fried glow is preposterous. As is the suggestion that type-o blood types need to eat meat. Insanity!

But good manners are a lost art; and I would argue that the importance of never wearing flip flops in public can't be over-stated. O'Brien has plenty of important things to say that both mock and embrace convention, simultaneously.

How To Be A Man is really about how to be a certain kind of man. But the world could certainly stand more of a certain kind of man. And if you're the kind of man, like myself, who occasionally needs some words of wisdom on waxing...: this book is indispensable.

What An Eye Opener!

As a "nice guy" myself, I could totally relate to Rom's pointers in what I've been doing wrong for decades. His advice for dating success is logical, intelligent, and doable. He seems to have keen insight into female and male nature. Unfortunately, it's too late for me, but if you're still a young guy (i.e. under 40), take Rom's advice, and, at the very least, women will hold you in higher esteem and not treat you with contempt, however veiled it might be.

Master of Business Awareness

Of the many reviews I have written here, writing a review for this text was among the most difficult because "The Personal MBA" has a large target market consisting of a wide variety of potential readers, and the vast majority of reviews here are very positive. Because of this situation, I fall back on my review philosophy, which is to write as objectively as possible, taking into account the claims of the author in terms of their goals, as well as comparing to other materials in the marketplace. What is not necessarily fair is to write solely based on my knowledge or experience, which often times does not match the backgrounds of the target audience.

Admittedly, this text is very well written. The writing style and organization of Kaufman contributes greatly to readability, and I enjoyed this aspect of this book. Many business works have a lot of fluff, and in general most of this text provides substance that will be appreciated by many readers. In addition, the history behind this book is interesting in that it came about as a natural step after the author created a heavily visited blog listing books and resources he had found valuable in his studies, so readers can be assured that this text was not written from an ivory tower perspective but resulted directly from reader interest.

The author writes at length in his first chapter as to why this book should be read. It is not easy summarizing this chapter in a few short sentences, but Kaufman mentions that what he provides here is "a set of foundational business concepts that you can use to get things done. Reading this book will give you a firm foundation of business knowledge you can use to make things happen. Once you master the fundamentals, you can accomplish even the most challenging business goals with surprising ease." Later, the author calls this text "a self-directed crash course in business", and provides an extensive discourse as to why the traditional MBA does not provide significant value.

Neither the author nor myself has an MBA, although we have both gone to business school (and I also have a graduate degree). While I cannot speak for the author, in my opinion there is substantial material in this text to provide to the business neophyte. However, I was unfortunately not overly impressed with the material Kaufman provides after chapter 6, which is midway through the book. The author makes up on this aspect to some extent by providing an appendix entitled "How to Continue Your Business Studies" that lists dozens of texts in a variety of business topics, although this list serves as a reminder that, as communicated in the introduction, what the author provides here is an introductory text.

If you do not have time to read this whole text, I recommend reading chapter 2, entitled "Value Creation" on creating value for customers. The summary that the author provides on the "Twelve Standard Forms of Value" (product, service, shared resource, subscription, resale, lease, agency, audience aggregation, loan, option, insurance, capital), for example, is very well done. The "Ten Ways to Evaluate a Market" is also especially well done. The author obviously summarizes and synthesizes material from disparate sources very well, but the reader needs to be aware that much of the content provided is just that, a CliffsNotes-styled survey of what the author has determined is fundamental to studying business.

From the perspective of a consultant, be aware however that this material is sometimes overly summarized and synthesized. For example, in his 3-chapter presentation on understanding systems, analyzing systems, and improving systems, many important topics are glossed over, and unless the reader understands the substance that is waiting for them within the reading lists the author provides, they may minimize the importance or complexity of the topics. For example, the definition that the author provides for "Return on Investment (ROI)" is limited to "simply dividing the amount of money you collect by the amount of money you spent, then subtracting by 1.00."

However, there would be no need for texts such as "The Consultant's Scorecard: Tracking Results and Bottom-Line Impact of Consulting Projects", by Jack Phillips (see my review), where several ROI calculations are detailed at length, if this calculation were so simple. Fortunately, Kaufman points the reader in the right direction, and presents in an entertaining manner, and so this book is recommended to anyone new to business topics, especially aspiring entrepreneurs. One of the best features of this text are the many quotes from other sources that introduce each of the subtopics in the 12 chapters provided here, and for this reason alone this book is worth a read.

***What's The Story?***

Picture yourself seated before a massive table. From corner to corner this table is set with plates. On each plate is a delectable, bite-sized morel. You're hungry, so you dig in.

Everything is delicious and there's a huge amount of variety on offer to keep your taste buds engaged. But as you eat, you begin to notice something unsettling: The food doesn't fill you up. In fact, each bite only whets your appetite and serves to make you hungrier than you were before you began eating.

You sat down hungry, but you leave famished.

Reading Josh Kaufman's "The Personal MBA: A World-class Business Education in a Single Volume" was a lot like dining at this imaginary feast. Mr. Kaufman's debut (he spun the book off of his very popular website) covers a wide array of topics. Unfortunately, this coverage is so shallow that I found very little of it to be truly fulfilling.

"The Personal MBA" is divided loosely into three parts that deal with business basics, psychology, and understanding how systems work. Each chapter follows the same essential structure: A brief overview of the topic at hand, followed by a glossary of key concepts related to the chapter focus.

This structure effectively organizes and introduces what is no doubt a nearly overwhelming amount of information. "The Personal MBA" is a synthesis of what Mr. Kaufman has learned from reading hundreds of business books over the last couple of years.

As an act of synthesis it's an impressive achievement. But synthesis is by nature reductive, and I feel this book and its audience would have been better served if Mr. Kaufman had covered half the material with twice the depth and insight.

As it stands, "The Personal MBA" reads like course description catalog for the ultimate MBA program.

***What's The Point?***

The foundation of all successful businesses is this: Identify a need and then satisfy that need better than anyone else in the market.

Competition is a good thing! Entering a competitive market tells you that there are paying customers for the services or products you wish to offer.

Resources, time, and flexibility are the three universal currencies of every negotiation.

Your ability to succeed at any given task is directly proportionate to the amount of undivided attention you can give to that task. Productive multitasking is a myth.

Capitalizing on your strengths rather than working to shore up your weaknesses will empower you to get more done.

Gall's Law: All complex systems that work evolved from less complex systems that worked.

This is just a smattering of the many, many topics covered in the book. It's also about how deep "The Personal MBA" explores each one.

***Buy, Borrow, Skip?***

If you have any experience at all with business, "The Personal MBA" is a book to borrow and skim through. There's definitely good knowledge here, but little of it is developed thoroughly.

If you're completely uninitiated when it comes to business, "The Personal MBA" is probably a good book to have in your library. At the very least it will prime your curiosity and point you in the direction of more comprehensive sources of knowledge.

From reading this book and perusing his site, it's apparent that Josh Kaufman is a bright dude. His passion for self-learning is infectious, and I feel inspired by his example.

I hope this isn't his last book. I also hope that whatever books he works on in the future don't sacrifice depth for breadth the same way "The Personal MBA" does.

What should you expect:
Reading one book will not make you an expert on a topic that takes decades of practice to be competent. The author has done a fantastic job of synthesizing a wide-ranging category of topics and presents short summaries.

I see use for this in two ways:
1. Get exposure to what you need to learn. In my mind, the biggest obstacle for beginners is knowing where to start. This book gives you that map.
2. If you are aware of some of these topics, but you need to brush up, this can be your go-to guide.
