EXCELLENT

Ever since I came across the New Oxford Picture Dictionary 2 years ago, I have been a fan. I like its presentation better than any other picture dictionary I've seen. This is a wonderful new edition of only the most basic vocabulary; excellent for someone brand new to English. Oxford's other picture dictionaries are more thorough, but can be overwhelming for the same reason. This is what it promises: basic. There are minor changes from the first edition, such as some illustrations, but both the 1st and 2nd editions are excellent teaching tools for the ESL professional, or learning tools for self-taught students.

P.S. I wish the other reviewers hadn't rated it so poorly. This is the MONOLINGUAL edition (English only), not Creole. Hopefully Amazon will sort out the confusion.

Excellent book for beginning English speakers

My wife is from China, and with this book is able to see and read and say the proper names for whatever she is seeing. It has room by the names for her to write in Chinese characters how to pronounce the English word. One of the most helpful things we've found to help her learn English. I would recommend it for anyone speaking any language who wants to learn English.

About the Author
Anatole France (pseudonym of Jacques Anatol Thibault, 1844- 1924) was the most prominent French man of letters of his time. France's style was precise, elegant, gentle, ironic, and humorous. He was elected to the French Academy, and in 1921 was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. Some of his other works include The Aspirations of Jean Servien, The Revolt of the Angels, and Penguin Island.

Brilliantly-written and a superb old novel

Jealousy, theater, joy, church, affairs, revenge, tragedy, stalking, suicide, and much more can be found herein!

A young man is quite amourous toward a gregarious, young stage actress but she leads him on. He's also burdened with a solid competitor for her affections. The young man's emotional journey, tenoned with the shrewd and subtle humor of the work, will hold the reader's attention to the very end.

The author, Anatole France, (a pseudonym for Jacques Anatole Thibault, 1844-1924), was one of the great novelists of his day. He was a very prolific writer in the mainstream of French classicism.

"A Mummer's Tale," (aka, "Histoire Comique") was written in 1903 but remains timeless in its certainty to entertain those who enjoy a good, solid novel. If you're a bit apathetic about the dreary selection of novels on the current market, this fine story might just make you a huge fan of Anatole France.

A masterwork of readable late-1800s literature!

Here, we have a fine novel, not much heard of, by a Master of the light fiction genre. I don't know why it hasn't caught on like wildfire other than, perhaps, the academics at the various colleges have somehow overlooked it and have thus not promoted it to students.

It's the story of two prospective lovers of a woman, a vain theater actress, who is also a bit of a tease. One of these fellows lusts for her moreso than the second, (the more confident of the two), which leads the former down a path of dubious decisions. The actress, being a tease and not a big thinker as well, will leave MEN who read this book wishing to strangle her just a little and from time to time. *.*

But that is the beauty of this book -- the reader becomes engaged in the action from the very start. This is the Hallmark of France's craft-work.

This volume work pretty much offers up all the reasons that we read great fiction including, drama, love, religion, jealousy, and, in this instance, suicide -- a really shocking one.

So, about the time you feel that you've read all that is worth reading, try this one and you'll have found yet another. I really thoroughly enjoyed this one.

I liked it

This book was a required text for a business class. To be perfectly honest, this isn't really a subject matter that I enjoy in business; however, I was happy to find that the way this book was written definitely grabbed my attention. I think that the material was interesting and highly informative and the book was written in a way that flowed well while reading. I liked the business examples at the beginning of each chapter which gave a better understanding of the materials.
As a digital copy I was happy that it had actual book page numbers instead of section locations. When an instructor tells you to go to a certain page or to do an assignment it was easy to locate.
The picture maps were wonderful but the tend to make the book load a lot slower when trying to move past those pages.

Kindle eBook version good for class preparation.

I'm rating the Kindle version because I have found it is a good tool for students. Its clickable Table of Contents, easy highlighting, and note-taking functions are valuable and not poorly set up or 'clunky' as I've found in other eBooks. It is also easy to add bookmarks, but I found this eBook's most valuable feature to be a quick navigation of all my highlighted text and bookmarks. One more feature I found helpful for studying: the "X-Ray for Textbooks" function, where you get a bird's eye view of the important terms of a given page or entire chapter.

Nicely done to the publisher. As an avid fan of most Apple products, iBooks functions pale in comparison to what I have been getting out of the Kindle reader, particularly with this textbook. Thanks for listening.

Ok book but he rambles through topic to topic

The book is not bad but it's not that great either. Think of it as an idea book in which you see him mention something and then research it futher. The rambling just becomes too much as you move along to the point where it becomes annoying to read. The tone the author uses is very nonchalant and he doesn't really explain anything. Ideas are just thrown out.

For me, the beginning of the book was best because it lays out some important basics about money and wealth building.

If anything, it would be best to look through the book and read on specific topics of interest to you.

I'm already working on it!

I found this to be a fascinating and most helpful book. It was so motivating I'm already working on three new streams of income, and about to start a fourth. Forget net worth! Cash flow is much more important, particularly if you're retired. Only one slight criticism of the book. It's a bit dated, but those few parts make little difference to its overall value. If you're currently struggling with how you're going to survive after you retire, try Allen's approach. It will open your eyes.

Excellent Text on Plasma Discharge Fundamentals

This text was used in my graduate electrical engineering course on gas breakdown physics offered at my school (a major U.S. technical university). The fundamentals of electron / ion generation in various electric field configurations and pressure conditions are covered in analytical detail, including all of the essential breakdown mechanisms which have been studied in literature. Also included is a great deal of experimental data useful for practical laboratory experiments with plasmas. The text is written at a level which should be useful for early graduate students in engineering or physics (beyond the level of F. Chen, Introduction to Plasma Physics), although it comes easier depending on the student's background in plasma physics, statistical mechanics, or circuit theory.
