Practical Approach to Innnovation

This book blends narrative and practical applications on innovation to convincingly make a point: creativity isn't just innate. It's something we learn, we work toward, and something rewarded by practice. While that may sound obvious, Dr. Ness illustrates that the perspectives (or "frames" in her words) we adopt throughout life often limit our ability to observe and innovate. These frames have also led to many case studies in science, medicine and elsewhere where innovative breakthroughs were rejected rather than praised.

This book adopts a steady approach of explaining creativity/innovation chapter by chapter. Dr. Ness' examples show her breadth of knowledge and the history adds flare to a book that contains exercises and practical techniques throughout. It culminates like this: if a course were to be taught on innovation, this would be its guide. I thank Dr. Ness for her contribution and look forward to her future work on the subject.

Thoroughly scientific and exceptionally pragmatic

The book provides a mesmerizing account on the need for innovation to solve the pressing problems of human health and wellness. It introduces a range of tools that can help us come up with innovative solutions to demanding issues. Very carefully selected real-life examples from all corners of human evolution, history, and life (ranging from pencillin discovery to social networks to every day technologies) have been used to introduce new concepts related to innovative tools. The thoroughness in explaining each of the scientific terms and constructs is impeccable. The book is uncomplicated and is comprehendible to readers with diverse interests. Must mention the exercises furnished at the end of each chapter- delightful fun challenges. In short, the book helps us highlight the latent innovation in each one of us.

Dean Ness is one of the most intelligent, community minded women I have ever met. In her book she describes many of the scientific discoveries in the past and how they happened because someone saw something in a new way and decided to investigate. Any teacher or parent will enjoy this book about problem solving. For a scientific book - this was easy to read, entertaining, and enlightening.

Lacks as a course textbook

I had this as a text for a Risk Analysis graduate level course. I am not a great fan this text for this course.

While there is good information, the author is really promoting his FRAAP process. It also lacks in the development of ideas for those that do not have a risk background. With a full 75% of the book written as appendices of many similar tables, I feel that more descriptions of the processes of analysis and assessment would have been of greater benefit.

It is accurate and understandable, it is just not great. It seems to spend too much time on too few topics. About half the book is appendix, but if it is your textbook you don't have much choice.

Really great action, excitement and suspense!

"Acts of Vengeance" is the second book in Robert Gandt's "Brick Maxwell" series of novels, and the best one of the three that I've read so far. There's lots of really great combat action, lots of excitement, and a plot that provides quite a bit of suspense.

The action takes place in and around Yemen in the Middle East, where Brick Maxwell is commanding a squadron of F/A-18 Hornets flying off the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. In addition to the usual conflicts between the American forces and some local "bad guys" there are also some serious conflicts between various American interests. In other words, some of the "good guys" are causing just as many problems as the "bad guys".

Combat scenes are taking place in the air, on the ground, and at sea. There are some great dogfights between the American F/A-18 Hornets and F-14 Tomcats on one side and some Russian-built MiG-29 Fulcrums on the other side. Meanwhile, a Marine Expeditionary Unit has been ambushed on the ground and is fighting for its life against a much larger number of attackers. And last but not least, out in the Gulf of Aden a Russian-built Kilo class submarine is silently stalking the USS Ronald Reagan, getting ready to fire four torpedoes at point-blank range!

The description of how the submarine slowly closes in on the unsuspecting USS Ronald Reagan provides some of the best suspense I've experienced in a military combat novel in a long time. And Robert Gandt's descriptions of all of the various kinds of combat ring true, making it all the more exciting.

On the other hand, the plot is pretty unrealistic for several reasons, and this detracts from the enjoyment of the story. To start with, the idea of Americans who are willing to cozy up to an Arab revolutionary leader who is responsible for the death of two US Navy Admirals and an American ambassador is pretty crazy.

Another plot element that wasn't explained (or else I missed it) is the question of who was financing this Arab revolutionary. Operating a private army isn't cheap, especially when they have six MiG-29's and loads of high-tech weapons and communications gear, etc. So where did the money come from?

Also on the negative side is the fact that the characters are rather stereotyped. This is par for the course for military action thrillers, but Stephen Coonts has demonstrated that it's actually possible to write techno-thrillers populated with real people.

The bottom line is that the positives far outweigh the negatives. So if you like military action books with lots of excitement and suspense then I can recommend Robert Gandt's "Acts of Vengeance".

Better than the first

ACTS OF VENGEANCE is the second in the high-voltage military adventure series from ex-Navy fighter pilot Robert Gandt. His scenes of action aboard the warship, USS Ronald Reagan, take you right onto the flight deck and into the cockpit of the new F/A-18 Super Hornet. Without giving the surprise ending away, let it be said that the intricately woven plot and superb charaterization of this story will hook the reader and keep him hooked until the nerve-shattering end. Be sure to read the prequel, WITH HOSTILE INTENT, to get the full story on how ex-asronaut and now squadron skipper Brick Maxwell fought his way to the best job in naval aviation.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the exciting drama of Gandt's first novel, With Hostile Intent, I eagerly anticipated this action-packed sequel to Commander Brick Maxwell's daring exploits over the No-Fly Zone of Iraq.
In Acts of Vengeance, Gandt takes the reader into the god-forsaken Gulf of Aden where evil terrorist forces conspire to commit widespread death and destruction within the venerable U.S.S. Ronald Reagan Battle Group. When Colonel Jamal Al-Fasr reappears to wreak mayhem upon the unsuspecting peace-keeping naval forces, Maxwell and his band of F/A Super Hornets vow to engage and destroy the enemy deep within the bowels of Yemen.
Once again, Gandt has woven an explosive tale that is sure to stir the very heart of every American who continues to seethe with fresh remembrance of the unspeakable horrors of the recent attack by Mid-Eastern terrorists upon our beloved homeland.

Answers the questions on Indian slavery

To say slavery was an economic tool and that slaves worked to produce profits for their landowners is misleading in the author's mind. Slavery, Chatterjee argues, must be understood as a domestic institution. Further domestic slavery and the slaves who were part of it must be seen as having multiple connections to indigenous caste and community groupings. Slaves were not exclusively members of the lowest society of the Indian caste system, and the concept of "slavery" should not be limited to those belonging to such groups.
The book's main chapters focus on the explication of domestic slavery within the Murshidabad court and on that court's relations with the East India Company and colonial officials. After an initial historiographical discussion of slavery, Chatterjee moves on in her second chapter to a description of the slave system that operated within the Murshidabad court and the relationship of that system to ties of kinship and nonkinship. Her third chapter describes the efforts of East India Company and colonial officials to manipulate and reinterpret indigenous slave institutions in ways thought appropriate to British (and sometimes Islamic) laws regarding marriage and kinship. Chapter four studies the economic relationships and exchanges within the Nizamat, the role played by slaves in this process, and the interventions of company and colonial officials in these exchanges. Chapter five examines laws relating to slavery in this period, both company and Islamic, and the various legal contortions through which colonial officials managed their coexistence with a slavery that was said not to exist.
In the conclusion, Chatterjee places her subject in its modern context. We must understand personal law in modern India as the product of colonial intervention and construction. We must reconstruct the history of domestic slavery in India out of the nineteenth-century genealogical, kinship, and legal subterfuges that sought to obscure and occlude it from India's historical past. Finally, we must include the "sexual reproduction" of domestic slavery within our understanding of productive labor systems in India. Only when we have done all this "can the legacy of administrative complicity and family collusion in the persistence of a traffic in women and children in modern India be fully understood" (p. 239).
