I didn't expect him to love his dead wife

I didn't expect him to love his dead wife. Through the book it was all he remembered and I couldn't believe in the romance. The whole idea of Deadly Duet was that they were bad but women changed them because they were special. Cherry, she had sad story but I felt sorry for her because she got Elijah who forever loved his dead wife with whom he had a daughter. I mean constant pictures, memories of her and the sex. Just no.

I loved this book, once I started I just couldn't put it down.
As we know from the previous books Elijah is a dangerous man, he's widowed with a fifteen year old daughter Mindy and while sorting out a deal Elijah is gifted Cherry if he doesn't take her he knows she'll be killed but will suffer beforehand so he's left with no real choice.
Since the death of his wife Elijah has raised Mindy single handed plus security of course and he's done a fabulous job but there's no substitute for a female presence and that's what Cherry provides and Mindy latches onto her. The relationship between the girls comes about naturally and we know it's only a matter of time before Elijah and Cherry find their way to each other.
Another thing I liked was Cherry, she'd been through so much and maybe as a result of that she was so level headed, no unnecessary drama, tantrums or escape attempts she was a really good character and I also liked that Elijah loved his wife, it's so easy in books like these to paint the previous relationship in a bad light and I appreciated that this wasn't the case here, he just slowly moved on.
For me this was the best of this series while I really enjoyed 'Fear the Boss' and 'The Scarred One' I loved this.

Elijah first appeared in the Deadly Duet books, I'm so pleased the author decided to give him his own story. When Elijah is called to a warehouse by a man he does business with, there's a gift waiting for him. A young woman, if he doesn't want her they are going to kill her. With no other option Elijah takes Cherry home. Elijah has a 15 year old daughter Mindy whom he has brought up by himself since his wife died giving birth to her. Mindy immediately takes to Cherry. There's a spark of attraction between Elijah and Cherry but she's only 20 to his 39.
I loved this story everything about it was well done from the plot to the characters. I especially liked Elijah he's a bad man with a touch of vulnerability about him, there's plenty of hot and heavy scenes as well. I even liked the cover. A recommended read

A Lovely Introduction to a Lovely Series

I will begin by saying this is the first Nora Roberts book I have ever read. I picked up this book on a recommendation from a friend. I had been looking for a new "something" to read, and just couldn't find it, so I thought I would give this series a go. I am glad I did.

The premise is four childhood friends who start out life "playing wedding" and eventually grow up to run their own wedding business. Each handles a different aspect of the business and together they are the "go-to" wedding planners in their area. Parker is the organizational brains, Laurel does cakes and desserts, Emma does all the flower arranging and garden planning, and Mackensie is the photographer. Each book in this series highlights a different one of the partners and the development of their own HEA. Vision in White is the first book and features Mackensie in the lead role.

I enjoyed the book, and am currently working my way through the rest of the series, but as I was reading this book, I felt like I was constantly waiting for something to happen. Usually in romance novels, there is some sort of tragic or catastrophic conflict between the couple before they finally resolve their issues and move on to their HEA. It took me a good while to realize that the "conflict", as presented in this book, was the only one that was going to happen. It is almost impossible to write a review of a romance novel without "spoilers" (as everyone knows everything will work out in the end), but in this book, the major conflict is not between our couple, but between Mac and her "piece-of-work" mother. Without giving too much away, much of the book is focused on the evolution of Mac , rather than the relationship between Mac and Carter. Mac's relationship with her mother is dysfunctional and the fallout from that relationship affects all of Mac's other personal relationships, including those with her closest friends. Everyone knows someone who is or has been in an unhealthy relationship, so it was easy to identify with Mac, but all the other characters in the book are so supportive of her that this one specific aspect does not seem to be the great stumbling block that the romance novel formula generally includes, hence my feeling of waiting for something to happen.

The writing in this book seems to be typical for romance novels. The storyline is fairly easy to follow. As I am already reading the next book, there are several larger story-arc elements that I have found carried over, so I look forward to seeing the larger picture. On that note, however, it was very easy to predict the love interest of the next business partner in the next book. I look forward to completing this series.

I Like This Series (Be Aware There Are Explicit Scenes)

I enjoy the characters and how they relate with each other. The friendship between the four ladies in the series is really fun and how they always come back to what's most important, friendship. When someone is being a jerk, you figure out why, you don't just ditch them. I enjoyed that aspect and the romance was sweet, you want the two main characters to find each other because you like them. (There were scenes that I would consider R rated, if this were a movie, just so everyone knows that's there. I personally just skip those pages and enjoy the rest of the story. But I know everyone is different.)

A Vision in White is centered around wedding photographer, Mac and her love interest, Carter, the PhD. Due to her upbringing, Mac is a commitment-phobe and Carter is the person that was apparently meant to help her see that love is worth the uncertainty.

I definitely enjoyed this book! It was referred by Linda Holmes from NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour. Nora Roberts put a lot of time into the B-plot (the wedding planning/photography business) which I appreciated. I realize this is a romance book, but I hate when it seems like the hero/heroines have nothing else going on in their lives than falling in love and making dumb choices. Nora gave adequate attention to Mac's business, her relationship with her friends, and needed insight into her relationship with her mother, who made her the way she is.

To be honest, I liked Carter more than Mac. He was a great example of a man that knew what he wanted and could easily express that, as opposed to the emotionally stunted heroes we see a lot of. Mac was more the emotionally stunted one, but for good reason I suppose.

I think they fell in love a little fast, but that's to be expected in these books. Overall, a cute book and I will pick up the next book in the series.

Thompson's Study of Base Human Nature

I came to this book via Susan McWilliams Dec 15, 2016 article in The Nation, "This Political Theorist Predicted the Rise of Trumpism. His Name Was Hunter S. Thompson." In it, she posits that Thompson intimately portrays the sort of self-destructive nihilism that rises among those whom the economy and society have cast aside - those who find "the game" completely rigged against them. All of that is there, and, for good measure, Thompson also skewers lemming-like media hype, the over-reaction, strategic conflation, and exaggeration of some law enforcement agencies, and the cluelessness of a doe-eyed public. Beyond this seeming prescience (more like "the more things change, the more they stay the same"), it is a good, ugly read.

An interesting chronicle made too long for its own good. 6/10

Half chronicle, half overlong description of the ways and deeds of the infamous motorcycle gang. Thompson has a sure way of making even mildly interesting stories exciting by means of his amazing abilities as a storyteller, but after the first half of the book the tale starts to bog down, getting repetitive and in some parts relying upon his style to keep the reader going. His own insights about some particular Hell's Angel members are among the best things that this book has to offer, with vivid descriptions of both physique and character. Interesting and solid book, but it would've been better with some weight loss.

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" isn't Hunter S. Thompson's best work, this is. With deeper roots in reality, this is the true dawn of Gonzo Journalism. The Fear-and-Loathings take the Gonzo concept off-the-charts and are more an amusing romp or dark commentary. This is journalism rooted in first-hand experience, slightly twisted by a fine mind and writer of the first calibre.

Funerary Sculpture is the first volume on sculpture from the Agora in over 50 years, bringing together all the sculpted funerary monuments of the Athenian Agora, Classical through Roman periods, which were discovered during excavation from 1931 through 2009. The wide chronological span allows the author to trace changes in funerary monuments, particularly the break in customs that took place in 317 B.C., and the revival of figured monuments in the Roman period.The study consists of three essays followed by a catalogue of 389 objects. The author places the Agora sculptural fragments within the greater context of Attic funerary sculpture, moving from a general to a specific treatment of the funerary sculpture. The first essay is an overview of the study of Attic types of sculpture; the second discusses the specific features of funerary sculpture from Athens and Attica; and the third examines the characteristics of the funerary sculptures found in the Agora, thereby forming an introduction to the catalogue that follows. The catalogue includes stelai and naiskoi with female and/or male figures, sirens, decorative anthemia, funerary vessels, lekythoi, loutrophoroi, animals, mensa, columnar monuments, and more. There are separate indexes of museums, names, demes, places, and findspots, as well as a general index.
