Good but not great!

Let's just say it is a good book although there is a significant quality difference among the chapters. Sadly, the largest chapter which is the one on hypertension is so annoying that I could not get over it. It has over 60 tables!!! that no one will ever read. This is not the way I personally like books. The graphs are suboptimal and are not of the kind that would susbstitute for a thousand words for sure. I believe that this was an honest effort to write a book on cardiac drugs but it has a large room for improvement. Sorry but this is not the best cardiac drugs book over there.

An insightful and astonishingly relevant analysis of the great paradigm shift in Western culture since the thought of the Enlightenment, the experiment of the French Revolution, and the practices of modernity guided by liberalism. The translation is eloquent and dignified, as befits the 1860 original.

If Groen van Prinsterer wrote it, it will be good.

This political classic, only recently translated into English from the Dutch, is not very well known to American readers. Yet, I think that both the author and the book are quite important. While lots of Christians have gotten involved in politics, very few have gotten into Christian political philsoophy. I read this book near the end of 2015 and am currently reading it again. It is published by Wordbridge Publishing, which is under the direction of Ruben Alvarado and is the publishing house for some outstanding works on political philosophy and Christian thought.

Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer , commonly just referred to as Groen, ranks as one of the greatest Christian political thinkers and activists of all time. His realm of action was in the Netherlands during the 1800s where he was a court historian who turned his scholarly labors to dealing with political issues of his time. He rightly determined that the philosophy stemming from the French Revolution was a poison that would destroy Christian culture and the political order of Christendom.

Groen, along with others, started a political party. He and his political allies worked to create one of the most vital ingredients for a Christian society, Christian schools. His labors involved writing and assembling the Christian history of the Netherlands and the contributions of Christian thought and action from the time of the Protestant Reformation. Specifically, he labored for the freedom and opportunity to start Christian schools. It turned out to be an 80 year battle for the heart and soul of the Netherlands.

As with many Christian works, the first fruits are short lived, but the labors have long-term effects. We are still tapping into the resources of Groen’s thought. His name is overshadowed by that of his colleague and successor Abraham Kuyper. Kuyper’s brilliance and many accomplishments are not to be minimized, but without Groen, there would have been no Kuyper as we know him.

Groen’s main work was titled Lectures on Unbelief and Revolution. It consisted of talks he gave to a group of interested friends on the impact of the French Revolution and how that movement was at heart unbelief. That work, which was his earlier work, and Christian Political Action in an Age of Revolution were originally in Dutch. Outside of some Reformed theological circles and Neo-Calvinist philosophical circles, few people look into the writings of Dutch theologians and philosophers.

It is amazing how the little country of the Netherlands produced a whole array of brilliant Christian thinkers during the 1800s and early 1900s. The names include Groen van Prinsterer, Abraham Kuyper, Herman Bavinck, Herman Dooyeweerd, H. Van Reissen, G. C. Berkouwer, Klaus Schilder, and many more. We can add the names also of those who crossed the pond from the Netherlands to North America. Louis Berkof, Gerhard Vos, and Cornelius Van Til are among the esteemed names we give here.

Basically, our current political struggles are a re-fighting of the issues of unbelief. I don’t want to simplify and over-simplify current politics so as to boil this down to two charts with one being the good guys (belief) and the other being bad guys (unbelief). We are not talking about current candidates, the two-party system, or the 2016 election cycle. Unbelief is a deeper problem than Bernie’s Socialism, Hillary’s emails, Donald’s tweets, or Ted’s abrasive personality.

The problem is not located in the candidates, but in the heart and soul of the country. We expect flawed sinners to bring us “hope and change.” We expect walls to keep out problems and bombs to make the world safe.

We need to get back to some deeper issues. Some of the answers–or at least the right questions–can be found in such works as Plato’s Republic, The Federalist Papers, and Mill’s On Liberty. As we get serious about rebuilding a political and social culture, we have to mine the gold found in those Dutch writers like Groen van Prinsterer and in this fine book Christian Political Action in an Age of Revolution.

This book is a historical treasure, with a message applicable today.. However, one has to be careful not to over-interpret the message in the current debate on religion in politics. Groen van Prinsterer was an important figure in the Netherlands in the mid 19th century. He advocated independence, but not necessarily separation, of church and state. He worked hard to allow religious education in private schools. Public schools in the Netherlands were made by law secular only, and the government did not allow new private schools to teach religion either. Groen van Prinsterer started a new political party -- the Anti-revolutionary Party -- and was elected to parliament where he successfully pushed for the independence of church and state, resulting in curricular freedom for private schools.

Five years and 500 pages of Moon Knight

This is the first volume in the new Epic Collection that does not follow a character who already had an ongoing Marvel Masterworks series. This Mammoth book collects Moon Knight from his first appearance in Werewolf By Night #32 in 1975 and continues with all his appearances up until the cover dated February 1981 issue of Moon Knights own Book (Issue #4).

His creation is closely tied with his early role as a nemesis for the Werewolf. The reason he wears a silver costume and uses silver crescent shape throwing moons is because of the effect silver has on werewolves. During their first encounter he is some how infected with the werewolf's powerful strength which increases with the appearance of the moon. So he is truly a Moon Knight. Eventually this factor is no longer brought up, especially after we get his true origin. But it is mentioned until five years later when Moench finally unrolls the complete story.

Moon Knight was created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin. Moench a young writer who just broke in to comics two years earlier in 1973, writing some shorts for the Marvel Horror Books. Moench would go on to be most famous for his run on Batman but my favorite works by him is Master Of Kung Fu, Aztec Ace and Moon Knight.

By contrast Don Perlin started back in the Golden Age working on Will Eisner's The Spirit newspaper supplement. Don was still working in the 1990's doing art for Valiant Comics. When I first encountered Perlin's art I was not a fan but after more exposure to it I began to enjoy it. His art has that kind of "Stuck In Time" look that he shares with Steve Ditko. His art actually resembles a mix of Steve Ditko and EC artist Jack Kamen.

The first two issues of this collection are Moon Knight #32 and #33 by Perlin. I really enjoyed this run from Werewolf By Night and it made me very eager for a Werewolf By Night "Color Collection" which is long over due. Part of what makes Moon Knight very unique is his three other Identities. Although they are mentioned we only see him in his Moon Knight persona in these two issues.

Next Moon Knight got a two issue try-out in Marvel Spotlight #28 & #29 . These two issues are from the same two creators Moench & Perlin. Finally on page 12 of Marvel Spotlight #28 we get to see him in one of his other idenities as Steven Grant the rich playboy. In this early incarnation he is not the dark gritty hero. Here things are a bit "Campy" with the over-the-top super-villain the Conqueror Lord. Moon Knight's usual entrance into his stately manor is for Frenchie his Butler and Helicopter pilot to drop him from the Helicopter into the outside pool then he swims through a secret passage way to emerge in the Living Room. One hopes he had either a dryer or a clothes line right there so he would not have to walk around the house in a dripping wet Moon Knight costume every time.

Apparently sales did not warrant a book of his own at this time because next he starred in a series of guest appearances. First off was a four and half issue run of The Defenders starting with Defenders #47. This is the Story of the Defenders clash with Scorpio and his Zodiac family. That story actually started with Defenders #46 but since Moon Knight was not with the Defenders until #47, it was not reprinted. Like wise issue #51 wraps up the Scorpio stoy-line and then Moon Knight departs before they embark on their clash with The Ringer So only the first half of that comic is reprinted here. These issues were written by David Anthony Kraft along with Roger Slifer and David Warner and Illustrated by Keith Giffen.

To be honest I did not know the story-line had started with #46 until I was researching it for this review, so it is not needed to enjoy this story. Since Moon Knight and Night Hawk both started as analogs of Batman, it is fun seeing them together. It it revealed that Scorpio is Nick Fury's 52 year old brother. This is a strange and quirky story which tries to make the readers sympathize with Scorpio. Both the Hero's and Villains talk a lot about beer and are shown enjoying a cans of Beer (Schiltz).

Giffen's art for Defenders #48 through #50 is inked by Dan Green, Mike Royer and Giffen himself. Those issues look like Jack Kirby drew them. Defenders #46 and the half issue #51 are inked by Klaus Janson. These look very good nice but you loose the "Kirby rift" that Giffen had going for him.

Next was a two issue appearance in Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #22 and #23 written by Bill Mantlo. Although Mantlo never ranked in my top tier of writers, one thing you could say for him was he was a natural born story teller who made his stories crystal clear. After reading these two stories I was perfectly caught up on this book with all the plots and sub-plots. I would buy an Epic Collection of Peter Parker in a heart beat even if some of the the villains like this issues Cyclone was quite lame. The first part was by the art team of MIke Zeck and Bruce Patterson. This was very nice and looked quite a bit like the art of Kevin Maquire. The second part features much more traditional art of Jim Mooney and Mike Esposito.

Next is Marvel Two-In-One #52 with The Thing and Moon Knight. Steven Grant writes Steven Grant and the results are rather boring. The art is by Jim Craig and Pablo Marcus and pretty nice, but the story screams "Fill In". Nothing really happens except for one long fight scene. The villian Crossfire is a total rip off of DC's Deadshot. Moon Knight does transfer to his Jake Lockely Cab Driver persona to give the Thing a ride. But the writer never even reveals who Jake is or why The Thing even needs a ride or where they are going. This is my least favorite story in the entire collection. Nothing happens and Nothing Matters. Moon Knight's costume is changed in this issue. His two tone pants are gone never to return. Before they were Black & Silver with the inside being Black. Now they are only Silver. Also his Glider cape becomes a traditional Superhero cape no longer attached at his wrists. The George Perez covers reflects these same costume changes.

Moon Knight would next appear in a solo series done for the back of the Hulk! magazine #11 through #15 plus #17,#18 & #20. This magazine was one of Marvel's first experiments into full process color. These pages also had to be reduced to fit in this collection. All of this resulted in coloring job I did not really enjoy that much. For these solo books Doug Moench made some major tweaks in the tone of the character. Moon Knight becomes a much darker , grittier comic with more adult feel.

The first story in Hulk! #11 was illustrated by Gene Colan and inked by Tony Dezungia. They turned out to be a great team, but it only lasted one story as Keith Pollard did Hulk! #12, The next issue Hulk #13 introduced us to Moon Knight's defining artist the great Bill Sienkiewicz. While only a teenager at the time, his Neal Adams like style went on to become a huge fan favorite. All these Moench & Sienkiewicz shorter pieces are quite good but my favorite was the two parter from Hulk! #17 & #18 which deals with Marc Spector's brother.

Next up is Marvel Premiere #21 a solo Black & White magazine which served a a showcase for a potential new series. This story was recolored for Moon Knight Special Edition #3 and that version is used here. That fact has caused some controversy but I did not mind.

Finally in 1980 Moon Knight gets his own monthly comic series and included here are Moon Knight #1 through #4. Moench & Sienkiewicz are going strong now and the first issue finally gives us the true origin of Moon Knight . It includes how he meets his "Girl Friday" Marlene and got his powers and costume. Moon Knight #4 (the final story in this collection) brings things full circle as we are re-introduced to the organization that first hired Marc Spector to capture the Werewolf By Night.

This collection is over 500 pages of fun and hours of enjoyment. The back matter in this volume includes the wrap around covers done for The Moon Knight Special Editions, original art work, house ads , a Sienkiewicz art portfolio and my favorite Sienkiewicz's painted cover for the Amazing Heroes fanzine.

Fantastic colors!

I'm 39 and read comics. I'm new to Moon Knight and this collection is a fun, interesting read. The color job on this Epic book is really nice. Looking forward to the rest of the book as I've just began. 70's comic book goodness!

Fast-paced and in-depth

Paraphrasing J.W. Goodman in his Fourier Optics, E.L.O'Neill helped consummate the marriage between communication theory and optics.

This book is not an introduction. In under 200 pages, It covers geometrical, fourier and statistical optics without patiently deriving the formulae in small steps. It feels to me like a train ride over a long distance, with many stops where the conductor points at important scenes and tells good stories that I did not know before, even for the places I previously visited. For example, page 26-27 talks about contrast reversal in a most direct fashion in real space, much more elucidating than treatments in frequency space only.

The range of the topics in this book is close to 50% of combined (Warren Smith's Modern Optical Engineering + Joseph Goodman's Fourier Optics & Statistical Optics), the depth is about 80% of that combo, while the thickness is only 10%.

Great for signal processing experts

I came to this book with a good background in signal processing (communications) and math, but not so much in modern optics. The book really brought out the connections. I was able to quickly grasp a lot of the early part of the book, once I stepped up from 1 to 2 dimensions (no big deal). Later parts were sometimes over my head, but still interesting and worth reading. Often I'd just scan slowly, getting the sense of the equations or physics without worrying about proving every detail, then read the concluding paragraphs of a section in more detail and get some understanding. If you have a background like mine, this is a terrific book. Probably pretty good for others, too, but I can't promise that.

Super Summary!

Really great book for seeing the forest without getting clobbered by the trees. I came to the book a practicing optical physicist. While I had seen all the pieces separately over the course of my education, I had never seen so much essential material presented so logically and so well. I find it light years more readable than Goodman, or Born and Wolf. O'Neill has the gift of being able to sense what is hard to swallow, and illuminating it like no other. I would elevate to an essential place on the shelf of any would be optiker of today. Would make an excellent senior undergraduate course, or gift for a beginning graduate student in optics.

Hard Math for Elementary School is new category of math book. The author, MIT professor Glenn Ellison, calls it a math enrichment textbook. The idea is to make it easy for teachers or parents to supplement what kids are getting in school with with complementary lessons that are harder, deeper, and more fun.
Hard Math has chapters to accompany most textbook topics: addition with carrying, multiplication, fractions, etc. It covers other important topics - prime numbers, counting, probability - that are being squeezed out of many curricula. And it has chapters on topics which may not be as important -- tiling floors, solving number puzzles, making polyhedra out of marshmallows and toothpicks -- but that make the book more fun and develop higher-level reasoning skills.
Hard Math can be used in many different ways. Some parents will enjoy reading it together with their child. A teacher can give the book to an exceptional student who could read through it on her own whenever she's done early with the regular math lesson. Or a teacher could treat the book as a set of lesson plans for his or her top math group: each section of the book can serve as a set of lecture notes and the students could then work separately or together on the corresponding workbook page. Hard Math can similarly be a blueprint for an after school math club.
Hard Math is designed to be accessible to very advanced 3rd graders. But Hard Math is very hard. Most parents will find that there's a lot in it that they don't know and most advanced kids will be better off waiting until at least 4th grade to try it.
A workbook (sold separately) contains over 100 challenging worksheets to reinforce the lessons of each section. An answer key for the workbook is also available (and cheap).

About the Author
Glenn Ellison is the Gregory K. Palm Professor of Economics at MIT. He is also the parent of three daughters and has spent many hours coaching middle school math teams and working with informal groups of younger and older kids in his kitchen classroom.

An excellent math enrichment book - highly recommended

I was lucky to have access to this book in manuscript form, and I used this book as basis of discussion for an after-school "Challenge Math" class at a local public elementary school. We had kids from grades 3 - 5.

I can not go far enough in complimenting the book. It introduces very challenging and interesting material in a fun way. What I like about the textbook is that it really expands the kids' understanding of what one can do with math. (It is not uncommon for kids to say "Wow" once they understood an especially cool concept). For example, one of my favorite chapters in the book is on "base 8" or how the number system would look like if we counted by eights instead of tens. The book refers to this as Bart Simpsons' world since the Simpson characters have four fingers only. This material is usually not covered in school curriculum. Introducing this to relatively young kids fulfills many functions: 1) it is pretty cool in a mind-blowing sort of way, 2) it forces kids to be flexible in their thinking, and 3) it makes them realize that math requires deep thinking and not just memorization. The fact that the author is able to explain this sort of material to young kids is amazing, but it really does work.

The textbook also comes with a workbook - Hard Math for Elementary School: Workbook - which has a bunch of challenging and fun problems. The problems are leveled -- the first few are relatively easy to do if the student understood the basic concept, but the problems get very challenging in the end. I would highly recommend the workbook. What I typically did was explain a small section of a chapter and then had the students do a worksheet.

I am so excited that this book is finally out! I have been recommending it to all my friends who have young children. It is really a very unique and wonderful book, which hopefully will lead to a lifetime of math enjoyment for kids. As a testament to this, I have to add that I learned a lot from reading the book as well, which I am sure will be the case for many parents and teachers as well.

My husband and I are professionals (engineer and attorney) and did not feel like our daughter was being challenged enough in math at school. She was tested for gifted, however, the teachers were still not supplementing her enough. She is currently in 3rd grade. We bought this series to work at home in addition to school work and it is EXCELLENT. She is very proud to show her friends her "Hard Math". Parents and teachers who have seen the textbook think it is too "hard", but that is exactly why we like it. We only spend 1 to 2 hours a week on the book and we are going at a nice pace. Highly recommend it if you want something more to work on with your kids.

Excellent book (minor tip that some parents might find helpful)

I bought this book for a second to third grader who wasn't being challenged enough by math at school. This book is excellent and covers topics that wouldn't be covered at school (either ever or until much later). I actually like the title, because it just challenges the kids and gives them real joy when they're able to figure it out while not disappointing them if they're not able to.

That has all been said by other reviewers but the reason why I felt compelled to write a review was my experience with the chapter on "base 8" arithmetic. I have some background in computer science and am very familiar with a binary system (base 2). I (and possibly the kid as well) absolutely loved the chapter - both from a mathematical as well as a sociological perspective (different people can talk and think differently based on their unique cultural experiences). However, there was one unintended consequence. The chapter uses Simpsons as an example of a society that might use a base 8. At which I felt obligated (encouraged by endless stream of "pleases") to introduce my kid to the Simpsons show. Not a wise parenting decision :-). I hadn't watched much of the show myself and even shows I watched before feel very different to me now as a parent. Simpsons is not an appropriate show for an 8 year old (or even a 10 year old for that matter). So, if you are in a similar situation I would recommend you to skip that chapter until the end of the book. Even from a complexity of concept perspective, I think it belongs much later in the book.

Having said that I must say that I truly am grateful for Glenn Ellison to have taken the time to put this book together. Chances are that any money he's making from this book is not commensurate with the value of his time. However, Glenn you do have a bunch of indebted parents.
