Now that we have the World Wide Web and Wikipedia, this will take the place of the Encyclopedia Britannica on your bookshelf. Combining science and art, it is another treasure from Taschen.

Featuring some 280 graphics in total, the book is divided into 5 chapters - environment, technology, economics, society, and culture to reveal some of the Earth's greatest intricacies in accessible visual form, all housed in a massive hardcover tome.

Each piece of infographic is cramped full of figures and facts but the huge amount of information presented is always well complemented by the beautifully designed visuals, making reading an enjoyment.

Very inspiring

In search of music education is a very inspiring book that brings into question the concept of a worldly music education. An education for everyone, that is all encompassing. The book first defines education, then music, then music education. It presents the problems with each segment and unites those problems dialectically; this approach solves the presented problems of music education. A great read for those willing to truly grasp the philosophy. Do not skim it or it will not make sense as is clear the first reviewer did... c'mon, it's less than 120 pages... finish the book before bashing it, and she quotes John Dewey a lot this is true but credit is always given... I loved it!

This book is a waste of time. It is boring, pedantic, unoriginal, forced, poorly written and of no practical use to music educators. Most of the theoretical ideas do not belong to Jorgensen herself; she owes her few good ideas to other scholars in music education who Jorgensen fails to credit. So, add poor scholarship to the above.

Succinct summaries of Western philosophical arguments. It's eye-opening and thought provoking. Not in-depth enough to replace an academic education, of course, but enough to set the reader's mind on a path to inquiry and understanding of our historical philosophical estate. By providing the proper context in all arenas of thought, Just the Arguments will improve the reader's critical thinking and, thus, perception, understanding and insight.

Sharing the Love (of Wisdom)

In JUST the ARGUMENTS, philosophers Bruce and Barbone have assembled a thorough collection of short essays on one hundred of the most influential philosophical arguments. It's a good book. Having a very limited amount of time to read, I have to be selective. Like others who have some background and interest in philosophy, I missed many of these essential arguments, and this book is an ideal refresher. If after reading an essay I am inclined to learn more, each chapter provides original and secondary sources to consult.

Many of the chapters are a concise review: what was the Third-Man argument again? Ockham's razor? James' Will to Believe? (If you want to plow through Varieties of Religious Experience, by all means!) Other arguments are thankfully to the point: Kant's argument on Why Autonomy Deserves Respect in two pages; Quine's Epistemology Naturalized in three-and-a-half; Wittgenstein's Private Language argument in three, (we should have read those as an undergrad, right?) The writing is clear and each of the authors have taken their time to also note the essential logical analysis at the end of each essay, if you care for that sort of thing.

Where a dictionary or encyclopedia is broad in scope, Just the Arguments is concise. It is written by professional academic philosophers for those of us who share their love of wisdom.

Great Intro

This is the book all beginning philosophy students and those who just love philosophy have been waiting for. 100 of the key arguments spelled out for you and both essay form and using logic. It can at times be a bit confusing for someone who is not familiar with philosophy, so it will on occasion make you scratch your head, but overall, a wonderful addition to anyone's library. I have a degree in philosophy and have been teaching it at the high school level for 17 years and I use this book to help me put together my notes.

Through Kayak, Debbie Spring brings us a compelling story of a teenage girl with inspiring will, strength, and courage. An accident leaves Teresa confined to a wheelchair, feeling hopeless and isolated. On the ground, that is. In the midst of wanting independence and struggling to break free from her parents' overprotective guard, she finds escape when kayaking during her trips to Georgian Bay...the concept of self-discovery and the will to keep moving forward made me appreciate and enjoy this novel. Teresa's character demonstrates the ability to grow, discover more about yourself, and face all insecurities in the worst of times. Overall, it was a sweet and inspiring read and I would recommend it to pre-teen girls. --What If? Magazine 2010

If I could recommend only one book for pre-teen girls, it would be The Kayak....The plot is a romantic coming-of-age story, dealing with many of the issues faced by pre-adolescent girls today. Teresa's conflicted feelings are clearly expressed through Spring's skillful prose. Foreshadowing for the plot twists is expertly handled; under Spring's pen, the love triangle story becomes fresh and fun. Emotions run high, but Teresa's self-respect keeps physical contact limited to kisses...I look forward to recommending this book to all my students. Ultimately, this book leaves a reader entertained and intrigued. Its thought-provoking treatment of handicapped people will stay with readers even after the last page is turned. This novel, which began life as short story, neatly addresses teenage angst, the benefits of team sports, physical disability, and whether or not we are our brothers keeper, all in one handy little volume...However, though [an] entire seemingly formulaic configuration, the character of Teresa shows itself to be infinitely human and believably self-possessed...As a portrait of modern youth, Teresa is spot on the money, not because the author has made her handicapped but because she is just a bit cynical, secretly hopeful, and reluctant to try new things but not completely put off by them. She is also in the process of recovering from the hit and run accident that left her in a wheel chair. Her adventures with handicapped riding and wheelchair basketball are well portrayed and actually informative in their description. Most importantly, this novel is an affirmation of life in the face of unforeseen obstacles and demonstrates how easily everything can change.
