Thomas Ashley-Farrand has practiced mantra-based spiritual disciplines for twenty-five years and is an expert in the use of Eastern mantras, including Hindu, Buddhist, and Tibetan. No Magical Cures

I don't believe that any book, music, person, meditation and so forth can bring about any kind of a magical cure. I picked up this book and the CD because I was at a point in my life where I had become unhappy about my job, my coworkers, my house, the list goes on. My attitude was bad and I was worrying alot about what could happen or things I couldn't change.

I have not said these meditations daily but maybe about everyother day, it only takes about 10 mins to say 108. My circumstances have not changed, I didn't win the lottery, my coworkers are still the same, the only difference is, is that I have changed internally. I stopped worrying about things I had no control over because if I found myself starting to worry I said the mantra instead to in essence focus on a solution then the problem, started smiling and being more open to people at work or around me and now I feel a great sense of peace (I also began to take some short walks to really focus on nature and it's raw beauty). It didn't happen over night took several months for me to let go of somethings but I certainly feel these prayers helped me to move through it.

Many stories and mantra's are listed for a variety of life situations, bringing in love, bringing in peace, removing blockages, removing worry, deepening a spiritual connection and much, much more.

Powerful, accessible, and practical spiritual tools herein!

I love this book and think it is quite a treasure (I first saw it on a friend's book shelf and decided I needed to have one on my own!). I love the practical spiritual tools addressed in this book. The author has a lot of experiences and provides helpful, informative back ground, history, and other fun and useful tidbits as relate to the mantras and stories associated. I've tried a few of them myself and find them very powerful. What you put in, comes out, or back at you, however you phrase it. If you're interested in incorporating mantras into your daily life or are interested in these ancient and powerful spiritual tools, I would certainly recommend this book!!

All I can say is MANTRAS WORK. This CD is good because it comes with a book that you can follow along while the Mantra is being said so you get the visual with the way it sounds. Because Thomas Ashley-Farrand was American, there is no accent to deal with which makes it easier to understand how to pronounce each sound. I learned one of the healing Mantras and used it last year when I came down with a serious condition. (auto immune disease). Without going into a lot of details, the doctors were very pleased. I'm doing fine now. I still have the condition but I feel strong and I look good considering what I had to go through. I think everyone should learn how to use Mantras. This CD and book makes it very easy to learn how to chant Mantras.

Really wish I had started my program with this book instead of being assigned it at the end. It's a really great way to see how other clinicians view clients in the field. Obviously, everyone has their own preferences, so you won't agree with the way everyone does their different styles, but it's important to know why and how they do it.

Simply one of the best

Achtemeier's commentary on Romans is simply the best commentary on the market for the layperson. Commentaries written by academics are often not useful to the general public, since they use Greek or Hebrew and assume a great deal about the reader's background. On the other hand, most of the popular commentaries are simply too shallow. Achtemeier does an excellent job of clarifying the issues for the average reader. If you can only buy one commmentary on Romans, this should be your choice.

A very readable commentary.

I really enjoyed this commentary. This was my first experience with the Interpreation commentaries and I was impressed. Dr. Achtemeier did an excellent job of writing for the lay person as well as the full-time minister. It was very readable, which is, unfortunately, kind of rare in Bible commentaries.

The bottom line: A must-read for anyone serious about New Testament theology, or those intending to teach/preach on Romans.

Another fantastic commentary in the Interpretation series that sheds much light on the text and provides the reader with a road map to navigate the theologically rich book of Romans. Achtemmeier does a particularly good job of clarifying some basic tenets of the Christian faith that are generally well known and accepted but the technicalities of such that are not generally understood: i.e. the legal justification by faith alone (not via the law), salvation through Christ, the Christian’s role in secular government, the universal applicability of grace and God’s motivation of love and mercy. The section “Grace and the State (13:1-7)” is especially powerful.

The author does overextend himself on two issues: infant baptism (pg. 95), and the Christian’s role with respect to the environment (pgs. 142-143). He takes a giant leap to apply scriptures to modern dilemmas, even though the verses convey a more broad, general idea. This is a minor blemish in an otherwise gorgeous composition.

Of note, this book will be overkill for the layperson or the casual reader.

About the Author

David M. Buss received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkley in 1981. He began his career in academics at Harvard, later moving to the University of Michigan before accepting his current position as Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas. His primary research interests include human sexuality, mating strategies, conflict between the sexes, homicide, stalking, and sexual victimization. The author of more than 200 scientific articles and 6 books, Buss has won numerous awards including the American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology (1988), the APA G. Stanley Hall Lectureship (1990), the APA Distinguished Scientist Lecturer Award (2001), and the Robert W. Hamilton Book Award (2000) for the first edition of Evolutionary Psychology: The New Science of the Mind. He is also the editor of the first comprehensive Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology (2005, Wiley). He enjoys extensive cross-cultural research collaborations and lectures widely within the United States and abroad.

A thorough, but uncritical, overview

If one reads Buss' text in a certain manner, there is a lot to say about it. It's organized by evolutionary challenge (survival, mating, parenting, group living), exploring how adaptations to each of these challenges might explain human behavior. The general approach is a survey of the literature. Thus on survival, the reader is introduced to hypotheses about the adaptive value of our taste for meat, sweetness, bitterness, spice, alcohol, how these tastes change during pregnancy, and how our attempts to gather food (e.g. hunting) shaped our species (e.g. male-female spatio-temporal differences and group dynamics). Common human phobias (e.g. spiders, heights) are explained in terms of adaptive fitness. While much of this may seem obvious, it is difficult to fault a textbook for explaining the basics of its field. Buss then introduces the evolutionary theory of senescence to answer the question 'why do people die?', and then most speculatively introduces hypotheses about the adaptive value of suicide. Again, if read in a certain way, as an overview of the literature, this book has a value. But don't expect much critical thinking from Buss. He seems predisposed to think that all human behavior is adaptive. While one can certainly imagine how suicide may help one's genetic fitness in certain instances, there is a big leap from this observation to suggesting a heritable mechanism upon which one can decide to advantageously end one's life. Given the high rate of physically healthy teen suicide, an adaptive hypothesis to explain this behavior seems farfetched.

On sex and mating, Buss reviews the psychological literature of mate preference, capably arguing that gender differences are due to evolutionary asymmetry, as opposed to competing hypotheses (e.g. structural societal differences drive women's mate preference). The chapters on kinship are dominated by further explorations of sexual asymmetry as well as the influential theories of Hamilton and Trivers. Moving on to social matters, Buss discuses reciprocal altruism, aggression, warfare, sexual aggression, and status. Again, it is a solid overview, but where it loses value is in its lack of critical assessment of the theories proposed. Evolutionary psychology has been wrongly attacked by many as a collection of unscientific, post hoc, rationalizations. It has also been criticized (e.g. by Gould) as attempting to explain too much of human behavior as adaptive. As such, a text on the matter should do more to contest these notions. Instead, Buss feeds right into them, with uncritical examinations of the evidence in favor of his favored hypotheses (contrasting with his criticism of non-evolutionary theories). In general, this book fails to adequately examine non-evolutionary theories, is uncritical of questionable methodologies (e.g. self reports), and is far too ready to accept dubious interpretations of correlations. But again, if you can keep all this in mind, and read with a critical eye, this book is a nice overview of the field.

Review for the second edition (2003).

The text I have is the second edition from 2003. Given that the field is relatively new, I suspect the newest edition has expanded a lot on the earlier ones. I give the book four stars because it is a good textbook, but Buss seems to be stretching things out to get to 30 pages in several of the chapters, even going so far as to say the same thing and cite the same studies in different chapters. It was a very easy to read text and was actually very similar to my "Animal Behavior" text by Alcock, and in fact, I would say that is a better text than this one for understanding evolutionary psychology. Again, I suspect later editions of "Evolutionary Psychology" have more human specific papers to cite than the 2003 edition (which relied heavily on animal studies), but I don't know.

Overall a decent text and highly insightful for anyone new to the field.

Very valuable for a strong foundation

If you are new to EvPsy, then this book is quite useful and informative. However, if you seek philosophical debates and analyses in this controversial field, you will be disappointed. I liked the book a lot because while I have read a lot on Darwinian evolution, evolutionary psychology is a a new subject for me.
