Of Great Value
By Joseph M Pimbley
Investing the time to read Erik Laykin's "Investigative Computer Forensics" is one of the best decisions I've made this year. I had known nothing of this field other than "sounds important." Now I have a strong appreciation that it IS important and I know WHY it's important. I like very much how Laykin blends history with technology with legal procedures with investigative methods. Whether it's learning how a hard drive works (I'm surprised computing still has mechanical elements!) or the definition of metadata or diving into the hacker sub-culture, there's a lot of valuable information for the reader. To show Laykin's sense of humor, one of my favorite parts is this sentence early in chapter 6: "Computer forensic examinations are often not well understood or appreciated and are often viewed by the purchasing party as a simple exercise in connecting a hard drive to a computer and pressing the big red button."

An excellent Guide for everyone involved in computer forensics, data breach investigations and E-Discovery tasks
By DRC
As a CISSP, I have read many books on computer forensics. Given the acceleration of all sorts computer related crime and the increasing business risk and exposure all business regardless of size have, it is important to have a straight forward guide to the complexities of any businesses response to a data breach, theft of intellectual property or other business continuity event. This book provides that in a concise and clear manner.
While computer forensics is certainly a core skill to bring to bear (along with lots of other tools available to IT staffs or specialized services groups), it is refreshing to see a good book for lawyers, paralegals and other private and public sector decision makers that will inevitably be faced with managing computer forensic operations, eDiscovery requests and Data Fraud issues...not to mention litigation issues that may arise later.
I enjoyed the writing style and sensibilities of the author who clearly has had extensive experience around the world in this field and provides clear, actionable guidelines to follow. For example, the first chapter talking about the "glue' that holds so many functions of business and society together like trust and privacy....provided me with a very positive personal reaction and set the tone for the rest of the book.
In summary, it helped clarify certain things for me especially in the E-Discovery and Privacy and the Data Ecosystem debate going on right now in the USA and EU.

A Detailed, Spirited Look at Digital Investigative Practices
By Anonymous
This book examines the investigation process from numerous angles, and spends a refreshing amount of time on the bigger picture: the way we use and protect data for social and commercial purposes in the information age. This is time well spent, as every investigation is shaped by the way in which its subjects exchange and consume information within the realms of their networks.

The book is approachable in terms of size and readability, but covers plenty of ground. This allows the reader to develop a vivid understanding of tools and methods for obtaining, handling, and analyzing disputed data defensibly in investigative and e-discovery contexts. Laykin covers every topic with a sharp, engaging style, including everything from the operation of magnetic hard drives to legal proceedings, data privacy, and state-sponsored cyber-crime. The level of technical information included, combined with Laykin’s perspective based on experience, is more than sufficient to provide a regular forensic practitioner with new insights. In short, this is a really good read that presents itself like popular nonfiction while being as instructive as a textbook.
