The Collaborator: A Thriller, by Gerald Seymour

Immacolata Borelli is an accounting student in London trying to live an ordinary life. But when her ruthless family back home in Naples throws her hard-earned stability into chaos, Immacolata decides to collaborate with justice--to betray her own clan.

Together with senior Carabinieri investigator Mario Castrolami, she unwittingly sets into motion a terrifying and unpredictable series of events.

Gerald Seymour brings to The Collaborator the same irresistibly compelling storytelling that made his previous books, among them the bestselling Harry's Game and The Walking Dead, stunningly gripping and nuanced thrillers. Seymour has created a heart-stopping plot immersed in the Camorra's violent underbelly of crime and double- dealing that extends far beyond Italy's shores.

From Publishers Weekly
An underdeveloped romance undermines the hard-edged realism of this contemporary thriller from British author Seymour (Timebomb). When 25-year-old Immacolata Borelli rushes to Naples from London on learning that her closest friend, Marianna Rossetti, has died from leukemia, she receives a hostile reception from her late friend's parents, who link their daughter's fatal illness to the dumping of toxic waste carried out for years by Borelli's gangster relatives, one of the leading families of the Camorra. With the human toll of her family's crimes finally hitting home, Borelli decides to cooperate with the Italian authorities and provide them with everything they need to secure convictions. Then Eddie Deacon, a language teacher with whom Borelli had a brief fling in London, follows her to Naples, where the Camorra take him hostage. After the gangsters threaten to mutilate and murder Deacon if Borelli doesn't abandon her intention to inform on them, the story devolves into a run-of-the-mill suspense plot hinging on whether Deacon will be rescued in time. The Collaborator
By RS
Seymour is one of my favorite authors, but I was slow to read this book. His last couple books had disapointed, and this one sounded like a re-hash of his earlier book Killing Ground. But The Collaboroator turned out to be Seymour's best book in some years. The style is very much reminiscent of his earlier books from the 1970s and '80s and is more of a tightly plotted thriller than his more recent books like Timebomb or The Walking Dead, which were tedious, slow, strangely structured, and anti-climatic. The plotting and supsense here are tight. The characters, including Italian law enforcement officers, an American hostage negoitator, the Camorra members, and the young women who will give evidence against her criminal family, are the best of Seymour's more recent books and refreshing and much more convincing than the large number of generic MI6 people and Islamic terrorists who have populated the last few books. Only problem is that the book is way too long for such a fairly simple, small scale story with a small cast of characters. Cutitng the narrative down a bit would have made a much tighter, faster story, but The Collaborator is still Seymour's best book in years and hopefully his next book will follow this style. It's rare to find an intelligent, realistic, well-written, entertaining thriller these days, so thankfully Seymour, after a couple duds, is still doing it.

great suspense thriller

In London, Italian Immacolata Borelli attends school for a degree in accounting. When she learns of the death of her best friend Marianna Rossetti from leukemia, Immacolata flies to Naples to attend the funeral. However, Marianna's grieving raging parents treat her with scorn even spitting on her. They blame their daughter's death on the Borelli crime family that belongs to the vicious Camorra network of families; her kin controls Naples whose trucks dumped toxic material in the fields and waters.

Immacolata is traumatized by the experience and believes redemption is in order for her implicit failure to acknowledge the harm her family causes. She returns to London where she calls the Palace of Justice in Naples offering her services as an informant turning in her family. Speciale Investigator Mario Castrolami works the Camorra case; he understands the danger Immacolata will face as the mob will kill anyone who betrays them; collateral damage being acceptable. On the other hand Immacolata failed to consider her English boyfriend Eddie Deacon a teacher; as ruthless "Il Pistole" enforces the mob rules, which means killing any informer even the daughter of a cherished leader.

This is a great suspense thriller as the reader anticipates with each spin an OK Corral confrontation on the streets of Naples and perhaps London. Fast-paced with a strong cast on all sides of the law, Immacolata makes the tale as the title character who expects to die but believes she is finally doing the morally correct thing.

Eddie keeps a stiff upper lip
By Mr. Joe
"We can't all be heroes because somebody has to sit on the kerb and clap as they go by." - Will Rogers, as quoted in THE COLLABORATOR

Immacolata, from Naples, studies accountancy in London. She's called home to attend the funeral of her best friend, Marianna, dead of leukemia - leukemia caused by the tons of toxic waste illegally dumped onto the countryside by the trucks of the brutal Borelli criminal family. Devastated, Immacolata vows to bring the Borelli clan down. And she can do it, too, because she's Immacolata Borelli, daughter of the current capo, Pasquale, and his wife Gabriella, and granddaughter of the founding patriarch, Carmine, and his wife Anna, and sister to Vincenzo, Giovanni, and Silvio. Immacolata knows where the bodies are buried, so to speak, and she's willing to tell all and betray all to the government prosecutor in the Naples Palace of Justice.

THE COLLABORATOR teaches the reader more than he thought he'd ever know about the day-to-day workings of the Camorra, one of the oldest and largest Italian criminal organizations and centered in Naples.

A feature of all of Gerald Seymour's books is that he doesn't employ super-heroes in the popular sense of the term. His protagonists and antagonists are all ordinary individuals who, because of beliefs, talents, job descriptions, or serendipitous circumstances, find themselves on the jagged edge of a gritty confrontation in one of the world's grotty environments. THE COLLABORATOR is consistent with that theme as well as another feature of the author's many works - Pyrrhic victory.

Here, one of the main characters, Eddie Deacon, is an excruciatingly ordinary bloke - a London language teacher, who might be described, even by close friends and his parents, as immensely likable but not very ambitious or dynamic. Indeed, he's almost a tosser. But that's about to change between the very big rock and the very hard place that are the machinery of the Italian justice system and a suddenly desperate Borelli crime syndicate. Eddie is about to discover reserves of strength he never knew he possessed.

Eddie is about to discover inner heroism.

It's hard for me not to gush about Seymour's novels. The wide range of topical story lines and deftly and knowledgeably drawn characters are simply extraordinary. And, regarding the latter, I'm always left with the awestruck question: How does he come to know this enormous variety of individuals so well?

I savored every page of THE COLLABORATOR and, as with every other single one of the author's thrillers, felt bereft when I arrived at its end. I can't wholeheartedly say this about any other past or present writer of fiction whose works I've read.
