Dame Shirley, Ina Coolbrith, and Mary Hallock Foote never achieved the fame and success of Mark Twain or Bret Harte, but they were celebrated writers in their time. About the Author
Raised in Potter Valley, Mendocino County, Ida Rae Egli is a Californian whose great-grandparents immigrated during the gold rush period. She graduated from Sonoma State University and later earned her master's degree in American literature from San Francisco State University. Now retired to coastal California, for many years she taught English at Santa Rosa Junior College.

Highly recommended for either California history or women's issues libraries

No Rooms of Their Own: Women Writers of Early California, 1849-1869 offers a fine collection of literary writings from fifteen women who wrote in diaries and were decades ahead in their feminist thoughts. Liberated from usual roles in a frontier world, their essays, poems, and stories describe their challenges and make for inspirational reading highly recommended for either California history or women's issues libraries.

Well Done!

Very important and informative writings which show little known contributions by early pioneer women. These wives and mothers endured untold hardship and danger in America's early western migration. Thankfully they even made time to write an account of these things. We are fortunate that Ms Egli did such thorough research to bring attention to our brave forebears.

Slow read

It's a very slow read. I have read a lot of Southwestern stories, and this one was a disappointment - I didn't bother to finish reading it.
