Easily Read and Informative
By Brian Bear
"Second Language Listening" is divided into 2 broad sections, the first laying down the theoretical framework and the second proposing a pedagogical model for teaching listening, based on the first section's ideas.
The first section lays out the theoretical developments in listening and the various models of listening that have held sway over the years. This section lays the foundation for the section following, which details the pedagogical model Flowerdew and Miller propose.
The first section takes the reader through such topics and top-down, bottom-up and interactice processing, knowledge types utilised in listening, the skills used and so on. The second section uses this to propose an integrated listening programme. While detailed, it is not rigidly proscriptive in nature. There are chapters on using technology and other materials for helping students develop their listening skills.
This book is imminently accessible and does away with lots of useless jargon that you will never use again. It is written with the classroom firmly in view and that makes it one of the most informative books I have read recently. In short, this is simply a very good book to have, giving a deeper understanding of the listening macro-skill. I recommend this book.

Only for the MATESOL-minded
By Matthew Watson
This is a tough one. According to amazon, 1 star = I hate it. I don't hate this book, but I certainly wish I could return it and also get my time back. I can't recommend it to anyone with a serious, practical interest in second language learning or an immediate need to apply what they read to their teaching.
Why not?
Well, essentially this book is an extended academic exercise taken on by the authors to develop a theoretical framework of L2 listening and then superimpose that framework on all of the issues related to this topic. While I really admire the amount of thought and planning that obviously went into this process, they only manage to suck the life and interest out of the topic. I've been out of academica for a few years now and this immediately took me back to the kind of mental gymnastics that academics in the humanities are famous for. I don't mean that to be insulting. If you get more excited about ideas than practice, you might really enjoy this. If you think that teaching is more important than learning, you might enjoy this.
Too many graphs and rubrics. Too many attempts to make things fit into the framework they're using, even when it doesn't make much sense or help teachers. If you have escaped from your institution and are now making a living in the world teaching students, you will find very little real of use in this book. There is one chapter on practical application, and it should have taken up at least half the book. They could condense the first six chapters into one or two and nobody would suffer.
I have a suggestion for current TESOL students who will surely be forced to read this by well-meaning professors. For every book with the word "theory" in the title, read through an entire blog by someone who speaks several languages. There's a growing community of polyglots on the internet who are publishing videos, articles, and interviews about how they learn languages. Virtually none of them have academic credentials in the field, but that's what makes them helpful.
